Find a Men’s Therapy or Support Group
So, What’s a Men’s Group Even Good For?
We See Ourselves More Clearly in Others
In one sense, we know ourselves best. In another sense, we have the worst possible vantage point to understand our patterns. So seeing ourselves in others, seeing our issues from the outside, is an important way to change how we understand and relate to the parts we’re working on.
Basic Human Needs for Connection & Empathy
None of us can get through life alone. We all need connection, support, and the chance to vent about the anxiety and sadness we all carry. It doesn’t make us weak or whining or anything. It means we’re human. Oh! And if you think your wife’s got you covered, I can guarantee she’s over putting all your eggs in her basket.
Working Through Our Social Anxiety & Conflict
Group therapy can be kind of like a workshop. It’s where the concrete work, instead of talked about, actually gets done. While a therapist can help with insight and assign hw, groups are where we can actually engage a bunch of other regular guys to work directly on our interpersonal issues.
Bringing Our Shame into the Light
How’s burying all that shame and regret working out? The truth is the only way out is the hard work of facing it, and that means sharing it. We’ve all done things we regret, and I can promise it’ll eat away at you unless you can find connection, understanding, and forgiveness with a few other flawed guys.
Practice Communicating Our Emotions
A cliche, but nonetheless genuine issue most of us have is difficulty understanding and sharing our emotions. And there’s no better workshop than a group. It’s where, in real time, we have the space to figure out what’s going on inside of us and then how to share it. Communicating our emotions is a skill, and this is where we can learn and practice.
A Firm but Kind Reality Check
Don’t worry, a men’s group isn’t just endless complaining and validation of bad behavior. Part of genuine connection means creating space to say and hear constructive criticism too. We need a foundation of trust and care, but we also need to be called in when we’re being jerks or idiots.
